AFC Championship Game: NEP makes use of new Canon lenses for first time

NEP used Canon’s new 4K UHD Digisuper 111 broadcast lens for the first time this weekend, deploying the glass during a live broadcast of the AFC Championship between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots.

Announced along with the Digisuper at IBC 2018, the new lens features a 111X zoom, delivering  925mm on the telephoto end (1,850mm with the built-in 2X extender) and an 8.3mm wide setting.

“Television production is an ever-evolving business, and we continually strive to stay on the cutting edge of broadcast technology,” said Glen Levine, president, US Mobile Units division, NEP.

“We spend considerable time collaborating with our manufacturing partners to optimize our product offerings. When Canon told us about these new lenses, we were excited about their evolution and quality.”

In addition to the new 111X lens, NEP also deployed Canon’s new 122X lens, among others, for coverage of the game at Arrowhead Stadium which was won by the Patriots.

According to Canon, both lenses have the ability to exceed 4K resolution, providing high-quality colour reproduction from wide end to telephoto end.

“The tight zoom of these lenses helps bring viewers closer to the action, while keeping the wide angle,” added Levine.

“Plus, the optical performance we gain by using 4K lenses enables us to capture better 1080p HDR images to create a more visually compelling story. We know several of our clients will be anxious to see them as well.”
