BAFTA recognition for London 2012 broadcast coverage

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were recognised at this week’s (28 April) BAFTA Television Craft Awards, winning in three technical categories covering digital graphics, sound and multi-camera direction.

The Award for Digital Creativity went to Channel 4 Television for its multiplatform Paralympics coverage. Graphics specialist deltatre and digital sports agency 13strides were recognised alongside the broadcaster for their work in designing, developing and hosting the C4 website, as well as distributing to smartphone and tablet apps.

Commenting on the Award, C4’s commissioning editor, James Rutherford, says: “A large team of people put in a terrific amount of hard work around this project and it’s fabulous they have been recognised on such a prestigious evening. It was always our ambition to raise the UK’s appreciation of Paralympic sport but we were staggered by the response from C4’s digital audience.”

The Factual Sound Award went to Peter Bridges, BBC Studios and Post Production’s lead sound supervisor during London 2012 for his work on Super Saturday at the Summer Games. Bridges also oversaw the general management of audio and communications for the BBC at the Olympics to deliver both stereo and 5.1 for transmission.

The Award for directing a multi-camera production was shared between Hamish Hamilton and Tapani Parm for their presentation of The London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony: Isles of Wonder. Hamilton also received the BAFTA Craft Special Award for 2013.
