Custom Consoles supplies furniture to BT International Media Centre ahead of the Commonwealth Games
Custom Consoles has announced the completion of a new Module-R desk and Media Wall monitor-support installation at the BT International Media Centre (IMC). Located in the BT Tower, one of London’s tallest buildings, the IMC provides technical facilities for practically every television company broadcasting in the UK. BT recently awarded the contract to rebuild the main IMC area at the BT Tower to broadcast systems integrator VSC Design.
“The core of this project was a 39-seat operations area which is being used to monitor and control BT’s media services and platforms for BT Sport and external clients,” comments Martyn Hales, managing director of VSC Design. “The BT Tower’s circular footprint allowed a departure from the rectangular layout of traditional process control suites. Custom Consoles’ Module-R technical furniture gave us the freedom to specify desks from an established and proven range of modules. These are configured as two V-shaped units with eight operator positions at the front and nine and the rear.
“To the rear left are additional desks in three rows with seating for a total of 11 operators. These face a 5 metre wide Media Wall. A symmetrical but otherwise identical group of three desks and Media Wall is located to the right. Media Wall gave us similar freedom to design support racks for large picture monitor panels which can be assigned to specific video sources or multiplexed. Custom Consoles assembled the furniture on site and our technicians then completed the equipment installation. Everything was completed and live in time for the Commonwealth Games.”
“Each control position has storage space for two computers in a ventilated storage bay below the desktop,” adds Custom Consoles sales manager Gary Fuller. “Every operator also has direct access to two 4U high sloping equipment pods, three 22 inch flat-screen displays on Ergotron manually adjustable support arms plus a recessed power and data distribution module. The desks are finished in maple with hard-wearing blue-grey Marmoleum work-surfaces. We have also supplied a customised circular printer-support unit in matching finish. This is constructed around one of the tower support columns.”
