Florin Mitu, former FIFA head of host broadcast production, was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to European Sports Broadcasting award at the SVG Europe Summit in Amsterdam earlier today.
Mitu’s career has included some of the most significant and transformative moments in sports broadcasting over the past few decades, from UHD and immersive audio to remote and cloud-based workflows.
During the Summit, Mitu was shown messages of congratulations from former colleagues and friends Simon Thomas, Dan Miodownik and Oscar Sanchez, before he was presented with the award by SVG Europe Advisory Board chairman Alessandro Reitano.
Reitano said: “Under his leadership, FIFA’s host broadcast operations reached new levels of innovation and scale, embracing cutting-edge production technologies and adapting to the rapidly evolving demands of global audiences.”
Mitu’s involvement with the FIFA World Cup started back in 1994, when he commentated on the event in the US for TVR, the Romanian public-service broadcaster where he worked for close to five years, having begun his career as a computer programmer.
“I was attracted to television and I started on my computer, in my free time, to develop graphics for television thinking that one day maybe Romania will have graphics on sports programming, because there was no graphics at the time,” Mitu said.
While at TVR, Mitu performed a variety of duties including graphics developer and operator, commentator, presenter, producer and ultimately sports secretary-general.
He says: “It was a small team of ambitious young people that had to do pretty much everything. So I jumped on production, I presented programmes, I commentated, and then I became eventually the producer of matches in Romania.
“That’s how Team Marketing met me. I took on the job at the beginning looking after graphics at Team Marketing for the Champions League in the very early stages of it. And then I took over the production area.”
After 19 years at Team Marketing where, as Head of TV Production, he contributed to establishing and maintaining UEFA Champions League as a global benchmark for top-quality sports broadcasting, as well as developing and implementing the commercial and TV operational concept around the Europa League, Mitu joined FIFA where he spent just under ten years.
He joined football’s world governing body in summer 2015, just before the start of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. He then went on to lead the host broadcast production planning and successful delivery of the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023, alongside all other FIFA tournaments.
Upon receiving the Outstanding Contribution award, Mitu said: “I’d like to express my thanks and gratitude to SVG for putting together this special event…this award is a tribute to all the hands and hearts that have joined me on this fantastic ride…when you receive praise for an outstanding production, it means our teams and colleagues and suppliers have all put in passion and expertise to bring them to life.
“None of it would have happened without love and support from my wife, a TV professional herself who sacrificed much but always supported me and provided a safe harbour to return to. This job has been more than a profession – it has been a passion that has driven me every single day.
“For the next generation of sports broadcasting enthusiasts – I say, work hard and dream big.”
Previous recipients of the SVG Europe Outstanding Contribution to European Sports Broadcasting Award include Olympic Broadcasting Services founding chief executive Manolo Romero, EMG UK chair and CTV founder Barry Johnstone, HBS founder Francis Tellier, international sport coordinator Velitchka Nedialkova, Graham Fry, former IMG production managing director and BBC Sport executive producer and lead director Sally Richardson.
