
At last month’s SVG Europe Summit, media veteran Mike Darcey, former COO of Sky and CEO of News UK, unpacked the boardroom decisions and business priorities that are reshaping production, distribution, and the future of live sports in a wide-ranging and engaging keynote session.
“Sport has been at the very centre every step of the way on the journey to the modern television world we know today,” he explained, highlighting its role in persuading people to pay for content when pay-TV emerged in the 1990s as well as in the adoption of new technologies such as HD and mobile content.
With the emergence of AI and a seemingly endless supply of content, sport again looks set to be largely immune, he added. “Sport will remain the one truly unique, distinctive, authentic pool of content out there, immune to replication, so it’s importance only increases.”
Despite this, there are still insecurities across the sector, especially when it comes to rights, customer retention and economic challenges.
