Harris-equipped fly-away debuts at Alpine Ski World Championship

Routing, core signal processing and media convergence technologies from Harris Broadcast are integral to a newly completed fly-away production facility created by Munich-based systems integrator and rental company Sono Studiotechnik. The facility has already been put through its pace serving as the IBC for Austrian public broadcaster ORF at the FIS 2013 Alpine Ski World Championships in Schladming.

Sono Studiotechnik facilitated all IBC operations for the Championships including a production gallery capable of controlling daily live transmissions from the tournament and coverage of the daily press conference, which was broadcast by multiple international TV stations.

At the heart of the system is a Harris Broadcast Platinum router with 11 integrated HView SX Pro multiviewers, which are used extensively across displays within the facility. Harris Broadcast signal processing and interfacing equipment include the Selenio media convergence platform and 6800+ modular core processing devices. The final specification provides an integrated workflow solution that, among other features, enables the combination of advanced multiviewers within the Platinum router.

Franz Olbert, chief finance officer at Sono Studiotechnik, comments: “Schladming is the first time we have used this new fly-away facility and we are delighted with its performance. Our client, ORF, is very happy so we are very happy. Through the high level of integration and the flexibility of the Harris Broadcast routing system combined with the high density of the Harris Broadcast processing platforms, we have altogether created an extremely powerful solution for live production environments where space considerations are critical.”

Mathias Eckert, vice-president, sales and services, Europe and Africa for Harris Broadcast, adds: “This important project illustrates how our team of broadcast technology specialists can help companies like Sono Studiotechnik offer advanced mobile production solutions to their customers with increased profitability. Sono Studiotechnik is a pioneer in this field and already we see great potential for further extending our relationship with additional systems and bigger international sports events.”
