IBC 2018: Nevion extends LAN and WAN transport, processing capabilities of Virtuoso

Nevion (stand 1.B71) is demonstrating a range of new and enhanced features now available on its flagship software-defined media node platform, Nevion Virtuoso, at IBC 2018.

Originally launched at IBC 2016, Nevion Virtuoso now includes enhanced SMPTE 2110 support (10/20/21/30/31/40) with a new multichannel audio digital interface (MADI) to and from SMPTE 2110 30/31. Nevion Virtuoso also features SMPTE ST 2022-7/SIPS protection for audio, audio gain and delay handling, pre-compressed audio IP, and automatic Dolby E re-alignment. A further addition to the platform’s functionality is the new break-before-make (BBM) clean switching capability that enables fast switching between sources.

Nevion Virtuoso also has new IP media edge features, designed for where IP LAN meets IP WAN. These include a firewall for network isolation, network address translations, SMPTE ST 2022-7/SIPS hitless protection, unicast to multicast conversion, RTP /IP monitoring, UDP/IP to RTP/IP conversion and bitrate policing.

At IBC 2018, Nevion will also be demonstrating an implementation on the Nevion Virtuoso of the new RIST (Reliable Internet Stream Transport) protocol, defined by the VSF to provide protection on nondedicated networks such the Internet where Quality of Service (QoS) can be an issue.

Nevion will also be showing on Nevion Virtuoso the recently announced industry-wide BISS/CA encryption standard. Designed to minimize the risk of piracy of live content by strengthening transport security, this allows cryptographic entitlements to be transported, together with the live video content, in-band. It also enables the rights holder to grant or revoke usage rights in real-time.

Johnny Dolvik, chief product and development officer for Nevion, said: “Nevion Virtuoso has seen a huge growth in its capabilities since it was launched at IBC two years ago. We’re committed to ensuring our flagship solution incorporates current standards, while looking to the future to integrate upcoming changes that will allow more leaner and nimbler production for our customers.”

At IBC 2018, Nevion Virtuoso will be used in demonstrations on the booths of Arista (8.E30), Cisco (1.A71), EBU (10.F20), PHABRIX (10.B12), Tektronix (5.A73) and the TICO Alliance (10.D31).

In addition, Nevion Virtuoso will also be a part of the SMPTE ST 2110 demonstrations on the IP Showcase at IBC 2018. The IP Showcase has been a feature at major industry trade shows since IBC 2016 and has been instrumental in helping the industry to galvanize behind the standards-based approach to IP. The event is hosted by major technical and standards organizations within the broadcast industry — Audio Engineering Society (AES), Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS), Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), and Video Services Forum (VSF).
