Live from Sportel Monaco: Mobile Viewpoint tackling the issue of broadcasting lower tier sports

At Sportel in Monaco (21-23 October), Mobile Viewpoint is focusing on helping rights holders to make the most of the right packages they buy.

The issue for sports right holders, according to Michel Bais, managing director of Mobile Viewpoint, is that they often purchase a bundle of rights that includes not only the premium sports they are interested in, but also many lower-tier or niche sports that are likely to achieve lower viewing figures.

Those rights holders have a responsibility to televise all of the content they acquire, but need a cost-effective way to do so.

Speaking to SVG Europe at the expo, Bais: “People buying rights often have to buy a whole basket of rights, so we try to show them how to televise those lower-tier rights.

“That’s the challenge; getting those broadcasts out at a lower cost. We’re trying to show people how they can save money on broadcasting those lower tier, smaller, or niche sports, to make it worthwhile,” he noted.

Bais added that despite Sportel being a rights-based event, it was important for Mobile Viewpoint to be in attendance to show rights holders what technology is out there that can help them.

He concluded: “[This show is less about technology] but you have to be here. You have to educate people [about technologies that can help them] or they just don’t know it exists.”
