NAB Preview Part One

NAB is a little over two weeks away, so high time to start previewing what we know will be happening at the show. Our US sister site has been doing sterling work in this field for over a month now, so what follows are bite-sized previews with links to the longer stories if anyone wants to follow up.

Signiant will show Media Manager, a system-to-system solution designed to handle the administration, control, management, and execution of all system activity — including workflow modelling — from a single platform. Also on the booth will be Media Exchange, a private cloud solution for fast, secure file transfer designed for the business needs of media content providers — from major studios and global broadcasters to regional post houses.

EditShare will showcase its entire product line-up in the areas of storage performance, file migration across storage tiers, enhanced file and metadata management, and new enterprise capabilities. This includes distributed processing for large-scale file ingest and proxy rendering, and system-wide workflow monitoring from ingest to archive.

Calrec Audio will show Artemis Light, the newest member of its Artemis family of Bluefin2/Hydra2 audio consoles. The Artemis Light introduces a new compact processing rack dedicated to delivering digital signal processing (DSP) and routing capabilities in a 4U enclosure. Calrec will also highlight its Hydra2 Operator, or H2O, a remotely accessible management system that enhances the flexibility of the company’s Hydra2 network router.

T-VIPS will launch the TNS547 DTT Monitor for DVB-T and DVB-T2 Networks, which provide end-to-end monitoring for DVB-T and DVB-T2 operators, at NAB. The TNS547 is the newest member of the T-VIPS nSure product line and is designed to ensure the delivery of high-quality video content by simplifying the monitoring and analysis of DVB-T/T2 transport streams and services throughout a terrestrial network. This new solution has been developed in close cooperation with customers and will ship at the end of Q1 2012.

Any Time, Any Screen, Anywhere will be the theme as GlobeCast spotlights multiplatform delivery at the 2012 NAB Show, at Booth SU 812. In addition to announcing the launch of a new over-the-top (OTT) platform in the Americas, GlobeCast will display a streaming Web TV service and highlight its solutions for global satellite and fiber delivery. The company will also highlight the expansion of its commercial footprint in the Americas, with a dedicated Latin American sales team now in place. GlobeCast will exhibit alongside its sister company, NETIA.

Chyron will showcase its newly enhanced Channel Box² (v. 4.6) channel branding system, which features 2D/3D design with a complete data acquisition toolset for all branding applications. Built on Chyron’s Lyric technology, Channel Box² allows users to access any data — RSS feeds, traffic, financial, weather, elections, tickers, promos, snipes, and more — and publish it on-air.

AmberFin will unveil a new version of its Unified Quality Control solution for content ingest and transcoding operations.

Wohler will showcase several new products, including the new DVM-2443 MPEG video monitor. The monitor is billed as a cost-effective four-screen monitoring system that offers broadcasters advanced test and measurement features in a stand-alone 2-RU configuration. It incorporates four 4.3-inch 16:9 ratio LED backlit displays for flexible and convenient at-a-glance monitoring of program content from MPEG-2/4 ASI streams, as well as PID table metadata, waveform, and vectorscope overlays, and audio-level meters. In addition, the DVM-2443 MPEG video monitor accepts two 3G/HD/SD-SDI loop-through inputs, as well as composite video, component video, DVI-I, and analogue audio stereo inputs.

Utah Scientific will show a new family of menu-based router control panels. The new panels feature high-resolution, full-colour LCD displays and buttons, offering a new level of user-friendly operation for today’s increasingly complex routing systems. The UCP-LC series panels offer 16 or 32 buttons in a compact 1-RU package and an innovative 3-RU panel with touchscreen LCD displays. All of the new panels are based on a new user-definable menu system that provides an open platform for defining all panel functions on a panel-by-panel basis.

Clear-Com will unveil two additions to its Eclipse digital matrix intercom family, including a new line of V-Series rotary panels and the Eclipse MADI (E-MADI) card. The new V-Series rotary panels provide users with control over audio level adjustments while the E-MADI card supplies 64 MADI channels per card from the Eclipse-Median or Omega digital matrix frames.

Ross Video will show new features and additions to its production switcher family, preview new software, and introduce Ross Robotics after its recent acquisition by the company. 
Ross’ Vision Series production switcher family continues to evolve with v15 software that will be showcased at NAB 2012. This new version extends the integration between Production Switcher, XPression Graphics system, and the company’s OverDrive Automated Production Control system. Sports and News workflows will be demonstrated that previously would have required multiple CG channels across multiple platforms, streamlining production tasks without compromising the on-air look. Also at the show will be new Vision control panel modules that accommodate additional external device control and the company will also preview its v12 software for OverDrive. Version 12 completes the set of redundant options, which include HotSwap to switch between OverDrive servers, DeviceSwap to manage sync rolling of video servers, and FrameSwap allowing two Vision switchers to be operated synchronously from a single OverDrive system.

Telecast Fiber will showcase its new Thunder system, a cost-effective, compact, and versatile fibreoptic solution for transporting audio, intercom, and data in mobile production, broadcast infrastructure, and live sound applications. 
Using just one or two strands of fiber and just 1 RU of space, the scalable Thunder system transports up to 80 bi-directional channels of audio, data, and/or intercom signals, configurable in up to 10 eight-channel blocks. Alternatively, rows of 16 XLR and DB9 connectors can be added to provide traditional audio, intercom, and data interfaces when those connectors are preferred.

VidOvation’s In-Net GoalCam was recently implemented by the NHL to aid and support officiating and instant replay to ensure accurate calls at every venue in the league. The In-Net GoalCam wireless video transport system withstands the hardest hits and specification needs of the NHL. The system utilizes 60 GHz wireless HD-SDI RF technology.

And finally, for this preview at least, Miranda Technologies will launch a significantly expanded fibre range that offers simpler connectivity within and between facilities, including a new, ultra-high density fibre to-and-from electrical converter system. It will also highlight its new, end-to-end loudness monitoring, logging and correction solutions, which offer more effective CALM Act compliance, using audio processing that’s adapted to best suit in-house and ‘wild’ feed content. For production studios and trucks, Miranda will showcase its signal processing, routing, and monitoring systems that integrate tightly with production switchers and audio mixers to deliver more flexible and more responsive operator workflows.
