OBS launches first engineering programme specifically for women in sports broadcasting
As part of its dedication to gender equality and in alignment with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) initiatives, Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) has introduced the Engineering the Future programme – the first OBS engineering programme specifically designed for women in sports broadcasting.
Engineering the Future is an internship programme designed to promote gender equality in the technical fields of sports broadcasting. Targeted specifically at women pursuing studies in broadcast engineering, telecommunications and related fields, this 24-week internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in a professional broadcast setting.
Participants will work during the planning phase of the broadcast operations for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026, contributing directly to one of the most complex and cutting-edge sports broadcasting projects in the world.
Interns in the programme will not only observe but actively contribute to projects that shape the future of sports broadcasting. They will work closely with experienced professionals and department managers, learning how to design, implement and maintain the advanced broadcast systems needed to deliver one of the biggest sport events in the world, the Olympic Games.
Participants will gain insight into the latest broadcast technologies, such as IP-based workflows, remote production and innovative delivery methods, providing them with the foundational skills necessary to thrive in the evolving broadcast industry.
According to OBS, this programme is more than just an internship, it’s about building a legacy. Given the male-dominated nature of the sports broadcast industry, Engineering the Future is a step towards narrowing this gap by empowering women with the skills and experience to succeed.
The programme is designed to provide a launchpad for women to establish themselves in fields where they have been historically underrepresented, ensuring that the next generation of broadcast engineers and technicians reflects the diversity of talent available.
The internship will run from 10 January 2025 for a total of 24 weeks at the OBS offices in Madrid. The schedule will be tailored to align with the academic commitments of the candidates and the needs of the broadcast engineering department. The closing date for applications is 19 November.
