Premier League selects ChyronHego real-time player tracking technology

Further to today’s SVG Europe interview with Keith Lane about Sky’s use of ChyronHego’s TRACAB image-based tracking system to deliver real-time player tracking data across the entire league, ChyronHego itself has confirmed that the agreement applies to all 380 matches per season over a three-year term.

The TRACAB systems — deployed at the start of the 2013/2014 season — are installed in all 20 stadia of the competing teams in the Barclays Premier League and produce 3D positional data and live speeds for all players, referees, assistant referees, and the ball.

“We are delighted to be working with the Premier League in helping to enhance its live football coverage,” says president and COO of ChyronHego, Johan Apel.  “Our TRACAB technology offers a quick and efficient method for collecting critical sports-related data — and the end result is a more engaging experience for viewers and highly valuable data for many other interested parties.”

TRACAB uses advanced image-processing technology to determine the position of all moving objects in the field of play at a rapid 25 times per second. The result is a live data feed that contains all the X, Y and Z positional coordinates for each identified object. The data can then be streamed in an open format to a multitude of visualization platforms such as broadcast graphics systems, online and mobile platforms, and can also be used to prepare comprehensive sets of performance statistics for sports analysts. TRACAB’s true, real-time data collection opens up many new possibilities for clubs, media rights holders and fans.
