Pro League looks to arbitration after DAZN ditches Belgian football deal

Belgium’s Pro League has sought intervention from an arbitration service to ensure DAZN continues broadcasting games after the streamer announced it was terminating its contract with the league.

On Tuesday, DAZN notified the Pro League that it considers the contract terminated. Having not secured any broadcast deals, DAZN said it was left with no alternative but to end its agreement with the Pro League.

Back in December 2024, DAZN extended its domestic live rights deal to 2030, albeit on reduced terms of around €84 million per season. However, DAZN has not been able to strike any distribution deals with the likes of Proximus and Telenet, resulting in matches only being available via the DAZN app.

Massimo D’Amario, managing director of DAZN Belgium, said: “We are disappointed to have reached a situation where, despite various attempts to resolve the situation, DAZN has no alternative but to observe the extinction of the contract under Belgian law.”

In response, the Pro League said it was “stunned” by the move and would take “all necessary legal steps to ensure DAZN honours the agreements made”.

It said: “Following a public procedure, DAZN consciously opted for a multi-year partnership, fully aware of the market conditions and the associated obligations. The Pro League, the clubs, and the fans have organized themselves accordingly.

“In recent months, the Pro League has consistently maintained a constructive approach in discussions with DAZN. The Pro League regrets that DAZN is now unilaterally terminating the partnership. This demonstrates a complete lack of respect for our football, the clubs, and the fans.

“Together with the clubs, we as the Pro League cannot accept such an attack on our football. DAZN remains responsible for producing and broadcasting Belgian football for the fans.”

Following that statement, the Pro League said on Wednesday that it had filed a request for urgent arbitration with CEPANI, the Brussels arbitration tribunal.

The Pro League said it had requested that “DAZN be required to honor its contractual agreements with the Belgian football clubs until a ruling on the merits is made. This would guarantee the production and broadcasting of the competitions for both fans and clubs. Pending the decision of the urgent arbitrator, the Pro League expects DAZN to fulfill its contractual obligations.”
