Sony cameras used to capture Coppa Italia final
Lega Serie A used Sony cameras and technology systems for Italy’s biggest football event of the year, the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday 15 May.
The final of the 2024 Coppa Italia determined the winner of the 77th edition of Italy’s premier football competition, between finalists Atalanta and Juventus, which took place on May 15 at 9 p.m. in Rome’s legendary Stadio Olimpico. Juventus claimed their first major trophy in three years as they beat Atalanta 1-0.
This is the third consecutive year that Lega Serie A and Sony have created contexts at the Coppa Italia final to evaluate innovative applications of shooting technology to enhance the spectacular qualities of the content, Sony said, adding that for this year’s final, the partnership has grown into a large-scale filming operation, using cinematography techniques and equipment to highlight the drama, improve on-screen detail, and capture the emotions of high-stakes moments.
“Sony has always been at the forefront of technological innovation, so it’s great to welcome once again their knowledge, experience, and equipment to the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa Final,” said Luisella Fusco (pictured below), media operations and broadcast director from Coppa Italia Organiser, Lega Serie A.
“The Coppa Italia Frecciarossa is always packed with action, and with people watching worldwide on screens, it is very important that we get as much of that drama across as we can. Thanks to the Sony team and innovative imaging technology, we are transforming sports content by using techniques normally used in entertainment formats.”
Kit used included the Sony Venice 2 Live Configuration camera for a cinematic look, with creative shots designed to emphasise the depth of field and elevating colour details from behind the goals. The Burano camera, used at the field’s edge on a gimbal, captured up-close players’ emotions and depth of the pitch, by leveraging the built in image stabiliser and autofocus technologies. And capturing the drama and emotion in the player’s tunnel was an FR7, Sony’s full-frame PTZ with interchangeable lenses.
Sony head of media solutions marketing Koji Andachi added: “The Coppa Italia is one of Europe’s biggest football events so it’s really exciting to get involved with bringing the action to fans across the world and working with Lega Serie A and their partners has been a real pleasure.
“We are constantly pushing technological boundaries to create the best viewer experience ahead of the final, and hope that this set up really brings across the excitement, drama, and beauty of the beautiful game.”
