Speedway secures new home in Denmark with Discovery
Discovery Sports Events, the global FIM Speedway Grand Prix promoter, has unveiled its broadcast strategy for fans in Denmark ahead of the 2022 season, which will see coverage brought to the widest possible audience.
Broad free-to-air access means fans across the country can tune in to every race from the comfort of their homes via Discovery’s 6’eren. discovery+ will cover every battle from the track live for subscribers with Eurosport’s television channels showing all the action from every round of the Speedway GP season and the FIM Speedway of Nations in 2022 for live and on-demand viewing.
As part of an enhanced fan-first experience, new insights including real-time data such as rider heartbeat, reaction time and trajectory analysis, and added views from 16 pit boxes will be presented for digital viewers so they can customise their viewing experience.
Home fans will also be brought closer to the action when Vojens hosts the world’s best speedway stars, including all top three Danish speedway riders Leon Madsen, Anders Thomsen and Mikkel Michelsen on 10 September, with localised on-site studio coverage for the FIM Speedway GP of Denmark – Vojens planned. Studio shows will also be offered for fans watching via Discovery’s channels and platforms in Denmark at additional selected key races throughout the season.
François Ribeiro, head of Discovery Sports Events, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer speedway fans in Denmark more ways to watch the sport they love than ever before. With every race available for live and on-demand coverage via discovery+, Eurosport and 6’eren, fans won’t miss a moment and will witness history being made this season.
“In addition to broad access to every race, our mission to tell the stories around the world’s best riders will be showcased with even more analysis from the best local experts, added behind-the-scenes content and breaking news throughout the season, forming the ultimate speedway ticket to the most engaging experience ever.”
As well as Speedway GP, under Discovery Sports Events’ new ten-year vision to further grow the sport, the FIM Speedway of Nations (SON) world championship will come to Denmark for the first time from 27-30 July 2022. Hosted in Esbjerg, the competition will be staged over multiple days in one city for the first time, with the home nation hoping to better its consecutive bronze medal finishes in 2020 and 2021. Friday 29 July will see FIM Speedway of Nations – SON2 contested by the sport’s top junior riders from seven different nations as part of Discovery Sports Events’ drive to develop the next generation of speedway stars.
In 2022, all speedway categories will be unified under the new SGP brand and offered for localised coverage in Denmark including the SGP series (FIM Speedway Grand Prix), SGP2 (FIM Speedway U21 World Championship) and SGP3 (FIM Speedway U16 World Championship), with a new international entry-level SGP4 set to launch in the coming years. After the reformatted FIM Speedway of Nations (SON) takes place in 2022, next year will see the eagerly anticipated comeback of the FIM Speedway World Cup (SWC), returning to the international calendar for the first time since 2017.
