Sport Production Summit: UEFA EURO 2016 in 4K/UHD – free-to-air Case Study

During this summer’s UEFA EURO 2016, RAI Italy became the first national broadcaster to offer a 4K/UHD premium sporting event to consumers with a compatible set. SVG Europe’s Sport Production Summit 8 September in Amsterdam presents a special case study on this collaborative project, involving Cristiano Benzi, Eutelsat, Director Special Projects; Tonio Di Stefano, RAI, Project Engineer; and Fabio Murra, V-Nova, SVP Product & Marketing.

The project had a number of technical difficulties to overcome, including the necessity to add visually-lossless low latency feeds within the existing 1Gbps connectivity already used for HD video, audio and file transfer. V-Nova P.Link 4K transported UEFA international feeds from the IBC at Porte de Versailles to Eutelsat’s Paris-Rambouillet teleport, where the signal was further edited and produced for up to 200,000 consumers in Italy. The service was then delivered to consumers via the Tivùsat free-to-air platform.

In this case study session, Eutelsat, RAI and V-Nova will discuss the technical challenges of this industry-first transmission of UHD content on a free-to-air platform. They will reflect on the video output delivered by the contribution 4K feeds to RAI’s remote production van and the subsequent distribution to consumers.

The presentation will demonstrate that premium sporting UHD content can be delivered to large audiences using current infrastructure and without compromising on picture quality, an important contribution to making the broadcast of UHD live events financially viable.
