Super League Greece chooses Hawk-Eye for SAOT and GLT
Hawk-Eye Innovations has partnered with Super League Greece and the Hellenic Football Federation to enhance the integrity of the Super League Championship Playoffs and the Greek Cup Final through the introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) and goal-line technology (GLT).
Following a unanimous decision by the Super League board of directors, SAOT and GLT will be used, for the first time in domestic Greek football, to enable consistent, accurate, and faster officiating.
The adoption of Hawk-Eye’s technology for semi-automated offside detection positions Super League Greece at the forefront of European football. The league joins other top national competitions, namely Italy’s Serie A and Spain’s LaLiga, as well as international organisations such as UEFA and FIFA, in the choice of providing all stakeholders involved with best-in-class solutions for officiating.
SAOT utilises over 10 calibrated cameras for optical tracking purposes, to generate precise offside calls by analysing player position through 29 skeletal points on each player’s body, as well as ball movement, all within seconds. By drastically reducing the time required for offside reviews, the technology minimises game interruptions, enhances the flow of the match and delivers accuracy in offside decision-making.
GLT uses ball-tracking technology through seven high-frame cameras focused on each goal, pinpointing the ball’s position and notifying officials within a second of it crossing the line.
Tony Page, managing director of football at Hawk-Eye Innovations, said: “We’re proud to work with Super League Greece on the introduction of SAOT and GLT. At Hawk-Eye, we have a track record of success in the introduction of innovative solutions for officiating in football, and we work to continuously improve the efficiency of our technology”.
Katia Koxenoglou, deputy president of Super League Greece, said: “The board of directors of Super League Greece unanimously approved the implementation of the semi-automated offside and goal line technologies, in the Stoiximan Super League Playoffs 1-4, to upgrade the consistency and accuracy of referee decisions. Super League Greece has decided to partner with Hawk-Eye Innovations, a leader in football technologies, with a proven track record in UEFA competitions and top-flying football leagues, to further enhance the integrity and decision-making process of the referees officiating the Stoiximan Super League Playoffs 1-4.”
The Playoffs will kick off on 30 March, with the title assigned in May, while the Greek Cup Final is scheduled for 17 May 2025.
