SVG Europe launches full programme for Sport Production Summit 2016

Reflections on UEFA EURO 2016 and the Rio Olympics, the ongoing LiveIP Project, and the potential of virtual reality will be among the topics under discussion at the 2016 edition of SVG Europe’s Sport Production Summit, taking place at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, Amsterdam, on 8 September.

The first major session of the day bears the title ‘UEFA EURO 2016: Achievement, Innovation and Journey to 2020.’ With some of the key players involved, SVG Europe looks back to a month in France this summer including innovative developments around 4K, VR, Livex and NGS – and we look forward to the 2020 challenge ahead, with matches being played in 13 cities across Europe calling for greater adoption of virtual solutions, IP technologies and the cloud.

The second session will examine the latest progress of the LiveIP Project, which is a multi-vendor system integration to showcase IP-based IT-centric live broadcast production using open standards including SMPTE 2022-6, AES67 and PTP. The collaboration between EBU, VRT and a group of innovative industry partners has seen the implementation of a live TV production studio at VRT’s premises in Brussels.

VR is very much the topic du jour, and in ‘VR: Towards the ‘Infinite Seat’’, SVG Europe will consider the phenomenon and what it means for sports production. What is the business model behind virtual reality and what is needed to get there? What experience can be generated, in the stadium and also in the home? Will that home experience be main, second or third screen? All these and more questions will be discussed by VR trial participants.

The background of the fourth session, ‘Call to Action: 12 GB Connectivity for 4K/UHD Production’, is that representatives of leading remote production facility providers are raising awareness among equipment vendors on the need for 12-Gbps SDI-over-coax connectivity per SMPTE 2082, for 4K and/or UHD production. Can 12-Gbps SDI over single coax become a viable alternative to the current approach of four 3-Gbps SDI signals – the Quad HD solution facility providers call bulky, cumbersome and unwieldy. How do vendors invest in the IP infrastructure future — if they must also look back over their shoulders to SDI routing accommodating 12 Gbps? Is this a viable option for future production?

The penultimate session, ‘Anatomy of an IP-Based 4K UHD OB Truck: New Perspectives’ will analyse the different approaches currently being taken to a new generation of landmark OB trucks. Increasingly, OB service providers are making the move to 4K UHD and embracing developments in IP-based video production, with new trucks having rolled out this summer. The facility providers have taken differing paths, but all are implementing emerging technologies that they believe will best serve broadcast clients in coming years. What are the key decisions around cameras, IP switching, vision mixers, servers, control, monitoring – especially with standardisation and interoperability issues still swirling around the industry? And will the new generation accommodate the desired single-truck UHD/HD production workflow?

The last session, ‘17 Days in August: Rio 2016 and the Future Olympic Journey’, will look at some of the workflows and production stories behind Rio 2016. For Sport Production Summit we analyse the mammoth operation staged by Host Broadcaster Olympic Broadcasting Services and the RHBs, highlighting the major production innovations achieved around capture, contribution, distribution and digital delivery to the world. The session also looks forward as planning comes into place for Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics South Korea and Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics Japan.

The busy programme will also include Platinum sponsor presentations, a full networking lunch, and evening drinks. For a full programme, and to register, please visit https://www.svgeurope.org/sport-production-summit-2016/full-program/.
