SVG Europe releases full programme for Sport Production Summit 2014

A keynote address from EBU director of technology and innovation Simon Fell and detailed explorations of second screen and 4K during the 2014 World Cup will be among the components of the SVG Europe-organised Sport Production Summit in Amsterdam on 11 September.

Taking place at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky on the day before IBC 2014 is due to commence, the Sport Production Summit is a welcome opportunity to take stock of the latest industry trends and examine in detail the workflows involved with some of this summer’s flagship tournaments.

The half-day summit will begin with a keynote from EBU director of technology and innovation Simon Fell. One year into the role, Fell will consider the major technology challenges lying ahead for European broadcasters, and discuss some of the key standardisation projects underway in relation to emerging workflows.

SVG editorial director Ken Kerschbaumer will moderate a panel session on the World Cup and second screen, examining the ways in which HBS and MLR broadcasters approached live streaming VOD, multi-angle services and stats integration from Rio. Specific issues to be considered will include the nature of the cloud coverage in place, including encoding and transcoding, as well as the type of social media integration supported for MLRs.

If social media represents one important way in which sports broadcast workflows are changing, then so does the emergence of UHD. In a special case study, Sky Deutschland head of innovations & standards/products & operations Stephan Heimbecher will go behind the scenes of the April 2014 FC Bayern Munich and SV Werder Bremen Bundesliga match that occasioned the world’s first live broadcast over satellite in Ultra HD with 50fps, encoded with the new HEVC standard.

The focus will then shift to the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the measures put in place by host broadcaster Sunset + Vine and the BBC to ensure both consistently high quality and increased viewer choice, for a panel session moderated by SVG Europe managing editor David Davies.

In a further exploration of World Cup workflows, OBS TV UK executive director John Hunt will moderate a panel examining the unique challenges involved in the live Ultra HD broadcasts of the World Cup’s final stages, as undertaken by FIFA, host broadcaster HBS and technical production partner Sony.

The day – which will also include lunch and extensive opportunities for networking – will conclude with a special preview of the Ryder Cup, due to commence two weeks after the summit, with input from host broadcasters and key facilities suppliers.

More details of speakers will be released in the coming weeks. For more information, and to register, please visit https://www.svgeurope.org/sport-production-summit-2014/.
