TERN and United add High Dynamic Range to Ultra HD broadcast spec

FR TernINsight TV, the Ultra HD channel from TV Entertainment Reality Network (TERN), has added High Dynamic Range (HDR) to its broadcast specifications. United, a leading strategic partner of TERN, has raised the technical bar to a new level by adding HDR to the post production process. As part of this on-going partnership to pioneer and deliver a premium UHD experience, TERN and United are extending the length of their collaboration agreement.

“This marks the next phase in innovative technology,” sais Rian Bester, CEO of TERN International. “In addition to our high standards in Ultra HD and the high frame rate, we are now taking the next logical step: HDR. This new technology allows us to include, edit and distribute more contrast, dynamic range and colour. The end product is much more realistic to the human eye and therefore has a major impact on consumers.”

Different standards are used worldwide in creating Ultra HD HDR. “TERN has selected Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG),” said Thijs van de Kamp, Workflow Consultant at United. “We made major investments and created a workflow in which we could benefit from all the advantages of HDR in post production. We can deliver a high quality end product with one master that is suitable for televisions with and without HDR. The end result truly looks amazing!”

Having already created hundreds of hours of Ultra HD content TERN is now developing the first 40 hours of UHD HDR content for INsight TV and will be producing hundreds of hours of Ultra HD HDR content in the coming years in collaboration with United.
