TVB and Edgeware deliver TV-over-IP services during the 2016 Olympics
TVB.COM, the digital media business of TVB in Hong Kong, used Edgeware’s V CDN technology to deliver its TV-over-IP services in both HD and 4K throughout this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
During Brazil’s first games, Edgeware’s TV CDN – a network designed especially for the delivery of TV services – delivered 4K content to TVB.COM’s myTV SUPER VOD service as the amount of UHD sporting content was dramatically increased. Through its OTT-platform enabled by Edgeware, TVB.COM was given improved reach and availability as its users were able to view content whenever and wherever they wanted during the games.
“Our customers expect nothing less than the highest quality in programming – and this includes TV services delivered over the Internet,” said Cheong Shin Keong, executive director and general manager of TVB. “By adopting Edgeware’s TV CDN technology, we were able to deliver high quality service while continuing to scale, add new services and prepare for the huge spike in viewership of TVB and TVB.COM during the Olympics.”
TVB.COM chose to deploy Edgeware’s TV CDN technology to help improve its customers’ experience and deliver amazing TV over the internet. The demand for the service of myTV SUPER is reported to have increased significantly since its launch. This led to the installation of the more cost-effective, easily scalable TV CDN from Edgeware.
myTV SUPER – launched in April 2016 – gives users access to IP-delivered live channels, and large VOD library, including Rio 2016 Olympics Games and 4K videos. This expanding library of video content can be accessed via a set-top box or mobile app. Its VOD alone delivers more than 20,000 hours of content via IP services.
“Major sports events like the Olympics are a perfect showcase for new types of amazing TV services,” said Joachim Roos, CEO of Edgeware. “TVB has shown how they can take televised sports to a new level by putting viewers in total control of everything they watch. This means sports fans can make the most out of historical TV moments and can enjoy every second of the games. Edgeware is very proud to be such a key part of the technology infrastructure that delivers this experience to TVB’s huge audiences.”
“TVB.COM understood the need to guarantee the end user experience,” said Peter Löfling, Asia Pacific sales director at Edgeware. “If disruption to internet video services occurs, it’s rarely the network provider that’s blamed — the viewer only experiences the disruption from the content provider. This is why we‘re seeing a trend towards broadcasters building their own TV CDNs which lets them take full control over their most valuable asset – their content.”
