Two months to go: Previewing UEFA Women’s Euros 2025 with BBC Sport, Sunset+Vine and Eurovision

In just two months’ time, the UEFA Women’s Euros 2025 kicks off in Switzerland, with 15 other nations joining the hosts.

Speakers from BBC Sport and its production partner Sunset+Vine preview the corporation’s coverage plans for Women’s UEFA 2025, focusing on not just the output and how it will be produced but also how and why broadcast and media can help elevate and grow the women’s game.

The panel, which took place at SVG Europe’s Football Summit, started with a focus on the role of Eurovision Sport, the EBU’s new free-to-air streaming platform, before moving on to a discussion between BBC Sport and production partner Sunset+Vine.

The panel:
Stefan-Eric Wildemann, EBU Eurovision Sport, Head of Football
Phil Bigwood, BBC Sport, Executive Producer
Sarah Bucknall, Sunset+Vine, Head of Production
Grant Philips, Sunset+Vine, Executive Producer

The discussion includes:
EBU–UEFA broadcast deal (00:03–04:15):
The EBU (European Broadcasting Union) secured rights to broadcast UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in 37 territories via 34 public broadcasters, ensuring wide free-to-air access, especially in smaller markets. Eurovision Sport, their free streaming platform, will cover additional matches not picked up by local broadcasters.

Localised content & AI testing (04:48–08:34):
Eurovision Sport integrates with national broadcasters, offering localised content and remote commentary. The EBU is testing AI-generated commentary in multiple languages but acknowledges it’s not yet production-ready.

BBC & ITV collaboration (11:52–16:19):
BBC and ITV will share UK broadcasting rights, with BBC emphasising editorial quality, sustainability, and audience engagement following the Lionesses’ 2022 success. Collaboration is strong, especially on technical resources and knockout-stage planning.

Production Strategy & Sustainability (17:24–24:42):
Sunset+Vine, leading production with BBC, will operate a hybrid setup using facilities in Salford and on-site crews in Switzerland. Sustainability is prioritised, with crews traveling by train and minimising on-site footprint, including remote commentary and shared technical teams.

Diversity & Talent Development (33:27–36:14):
A key initiative is to upskill underrepresented groups, particularly women in media, through hands-on roles in production. Programs like those at BBC Alba are used to build a pipeline of new talent for future large-scale sports events.
