With the UEFA Women’s Euros kicking off in Switzerland on Wednesday (2 July), watch as BBC Sport, Sunset+Vine and Eurovision Sport preview their coverage plans. Stefan-Eric Wildemann, head of football, EBU Eurovision Sport, begins by explaining the role of Eurovision Sport, the EBU’s free-to-air streaming platform, which will provide additional coverage of the tournament, aiming to complement EBU Member broadcasts and offering greater distribution and access to fans.
“Women’s football is at the heart of public service media, at the heart of the EBU but also at the heart of its members. We’re heavily invested in the coverage of different women’s sport. The EBU agreement for the Euros covers 34 EBU members that cover 37 territories. We spoke with UEFA for a long time about what they wanted to achieve and we realised we could bring very comprehensive coverage across Europe and we said that all matches would be covered live and we though Eurovision Sport was an excellent strategic fit for this.”
After Wildemann, Phil Bigwood, BBC Sport, executive producer; Sarah Bucknall, Sunset+Vine, head of production; and Grant Philips, Sunset+Vine, executive producer discuss how the BBC is approaching the tournament from an editorial angle. “I’d really like to be able to build on what we did last time [for Euro 2022]. We did lots of audience research and over 80% of people said off the back of the last Euros, their perception of women’s football improved. We’d like to keep that momentum going.”
