The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) is embarking on an exciting journey as it prepares to appoint broadcast facility providers for the upcoming 2025/2026 seasons. This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing the visibility and production quality of modern pentathlon events, which include five disciplines: fencing, obstacle racing, swimming, running and laser shooting.
UIPM serves as the global governing body for modern pentathlon and in recent years has expanded its offering with the introduction of obstacle racing (officially added to its statutes in 2022), in place of equestrian show jumping. This evolution reflects UIPM’s commitment to innovation and growth within the sport, aiming to attract a broader audience and enhance the competitive experience.
The current request for proposals (RFP) seeks to engage one or more broadcast facility providers for a two-season contract. The RFP outlines three distinct bundles of events categorised by geographical location, allowing interested parties to bid on specific regions. Each event is classified as either Level A or Level B, with Level A events requiring more extensive broadcasting facilities.
The selection criteria for potential providers will focus on several key factors, including cost-effectiveness, the quality of equipment offered, and the provider’s experience in managing similar projects. This rigorous evaluation process ensures that UIPM partners with organisations capable of delivering high-quality broadcast services.
The successful bidders will be responsible for providing a range of broadcasting equipment, including an OB van, cameras and production crews. UIPM will produce live feeds for all semi-final groups and finals, necessitating a total of six live feeds per event. The RFP specifies detailed requirements for both Level A and Level B events, ensuring that all technical aspects are covered.
Importantly, UIPM will also provide a core crew composed of key personnel, including a director, producer, technical supervisor, an EVS lead and camera operators along with some specialty equipment such as PTZ, minis and underwater cameras. This collaborative approach aims to streamline operations and enhance the overall production quality.
Broadcast operations for each event are expected to span five days, with a detailed schedule outlining the rigging, rehearsals and actual competitions. The events will take place in various locations, including Budapest, Sofia, Antalya and Cairo, with tentative dates already set for 2025. This geographical diversity not only showcases the global nature of modern pentathlon but also presents unique challenges in terms of logistics and equipment management.
The RFP emphasises the need for flexibility, as modern pentathlon events are often held outdoors and can be affected by adverse weather conditions. Providers must be prepared to adapt their equipment accordingly.
