Video over IP specialist Mobile Viewpoint supporting H.265, VP-9

Mobile Viewpoint, the leading European company involved in video transmission over bonded IP networks, reports that it has become the first in this space to implement the latest H.265 and VP-9 video codecs. These allow for even greater resilience and HD video quality, delivered at half the bitrate.

Using patented bonding technology, combining 3G/4G/LTE/WiFi/Wimax/Ethernet and Ka-SAT connections, this will provide a greater efficiency and use of available bandwidth.

At NAB 2014, this new technology will be revealed on the all-new WMT Expert-265 backpack encoder. All new hardware will ship with an upgraded H.264 codec. Customers will have the ability to upgrade to either the H.265 or VP-9.

Michel Bais, CEO and research leader of Mobile Viewpoint, comments: “Early 2013, the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) agreed on the new H.265 standard for video compression. As a leading innovator in broadcast-quality video over bonded IP connections, we quickly saw the potential.  Delivering reliable live video from remote and unstable environments is a daily challenge for our customers. After extensive testing and adapting this new encoding technology to our bonding technology, we are now proud to showcase what can be accomplished. Broadcast quality HD live video is now possible at half the bitrate and cost as previously available. With the release of VP-9, Google has introduced a licence-free competitor for H.265. In our labs, we are testing it in comparison to H.264 and H.265 and will be releasing it later this year, as an option on all WMT Expert systems.”

Customers include major broadcasters, such as BBC, Al-Arabiya, Sky Sports, NBC Sports, and more than 120 other global customers.
