Wimbledon 2024: Moov caps a summer of tennis with extensive role in SW19

The Championships, Wimbledon mark the completion of a busy summer of tennis for Moov, who were previously at Queen’s, Eastbourne and the Wimbledon Qualifiers at Roehampton.

“Historically, we’ve covered a lot of tennis for various broadcasters, and our grass season build-up to Wimbledon is Queen’s, Eastbourne and  the Wimbledon qualifiers, so we have quite a good grass court run in,” says Nev Appleton, director and co-founder, Moov.

“At these events, it’s more presentation and match graphics, which we use our own software (Moov Orion) to score and add match graphics. The highlight of our summer is then Wimbledon, where our operations become more extensive.”

The company is approaching its 20th year of involvement at SW19, working with Wimbledon Broadcast Services (WBS) and the BBC.

“We design and manage Wimbledon’s broadcast branding, which we’re really proud of. There are so many delivery points across the event itself and to all their rights holders globally, so being able to look after it and make sure it’s consistent across all those different partners is really a big responsibility for us,” he adds.

It’s also a responsibility that lasts much longer than Wimbledon fortnight.

“We regularly review the graphics pack with WBS, and every time there is a new stat idea, insight or even a new technology partner, we are able to support that initiative to ensure that the brand remains consistent.”

While Wimbledon is known and loved for its traditions, Appleton is keen to point out that behind the scenes there is frequent adaptation and innovation.

“Each year you come to SW19, something is different, Wimbledon does not sit still and really embraces innovation. For us this means we can always look to improve, bring ideas or innovations to the table – they have to be relevant though,” he says.

As this is an ongoing project for Moov it’s perhaps no surprise to learn that discussions about 2025 have already begun.

“We’re having design refresh thoughts about next year. You have to give it that much time and thought, because there’s a lot of moving parts and stakeholders to consider,” he says.

For its operations at SW19, Moov deploy a team of creatives, graphics ops, software and engineering specialists. The company also utilises its Orion Tennis Software to capture live scoring and statistics and drive graphics at Wimbledon, servicing multiple clients and outputs across the fortnight with fast and accurate results. This includes looking after the BBC’s presentation across two channels and their virtual studio, as well as delivering the world feed graphics and data for WBS. The one-on-one virtual studio interview room that Moov created for WBS last year is also being utilised once again and is available for all rights holders during the championships.
