Blackmagic Design Offers Products for Ultra HD Workflow

Blackmagic Design (Booth SL218) is exhibiting nine new products, including support for Ultra HD live production; major upgrades to existing lines; improved integration with AutoDesk and Adobe, and price reductions for its Universal VideoHub router line.

The company is introducing two models in its Blackmagic camera family. The Pocket Cinema Camera (priced at $995) comes with a Super 16mm sensor, 13 stops of dynamic range, and an MFT mount and records in ProRes and 12-bit RAW. The Production Camera 4K ($3,995), a high-resolution 4K digital film camera, features a large, Super 35-size sensor with professional global shutter, combined with precision EF-mount optics and Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) file recording.

New Ultra HD products
ATEM Production Studio 4K ($1,995) is the first Ultra HD/4K production switcher with support for Ultra HD live production with GB-SDI and HDMI technology. It lets customers connect up to eight SD, HD, or Ultra HD 4K video cameras, disc recorders, and computers for live production. It offers the features expected from a professional switcher: chroma key, transitions, media pool, downstream keyers, audio mixer, multiview, and the first 6G-SDI and HDMI 4K video connections.

The Blackmagic Audio Monitor ($1,495) has Ultra HD 4K technology built in as standard. It is a rack-mount audio-monitoring solution with advanced 6G-SDI video for Ultra HD video sources, as well as regular analog audio and SDI video inputs, integrated video monitor, and integrated LED level meter.

ATEM Studio Converter 2 ($1995) offers enhanced talkback features, upgraded design, and the addition of 6G-SDI support allowing support for Ultra HD video when 6G optical fiber modules become available. Offering four optical fiber converters in a 1RU chassis, it is designed to operate with ATEM Camera Converters and allows use of low-cost optical fiber to connect cameras long distances away from the live production switcher. It supports both embedded SDI tally and includes talkback features using the spare channels 15 and 16 in the SDI connections to the camera.

HyperDeck Studio PRO Ultra HD Recording, a software update for HyperDeck Studio Pro SSD recorder/player, adds Ultra HD recording in Apple ProRes HQ 422 format. Users will also be able to record Ultra HD and use HyperDeck Studio Pro as a broadcast recorder for Ultra HD recording and Ultra HD recording can be done using a single SSD.

The company has adopted 6G-SDI video for multiple products: Blackmagic Production Camera 4K, ATEM Production Studio 4K, Blackmagic Audio Monitor, HyperDeck Studio Pro, UltraStudio 4K, DeckLink 4K Extreme and ATEM Studio Converter 2. All support Ultra HD video resolutions, meaning that Blackmagic Design has a complete workflow for both live production and postproduction supports Ultra HD. 6G-SDI is suited for Ultra HD interconnects because it allows Ultra HD video to be sent down a single common BNC-type cable, is low cost, and switches between SD, HD, and Ultra HD formats.

Other New Products
DeckLink Mini Monitor and Mini Recorder ($145) capture and playback solutions feature 3-Gbps SDI and HDMI connections plus high-speed PCIe technology. Extremely compact PCIe cards, they provide PCIe shields for both regular PCIe slots and low-profile slots commonly found on servers. They support all common SD/HD formats.

Blackmagic MultiDock ($595L), a rack-based hard-disk chassis with Thunderbolt technology allows up to four hard disks or solid-state disks to be inserted and mounted on any Thunderbolt-based Mac or Windows computer. It accommodates independent disks or multiple disks can be stripped together to build an inexpensive Thunderbolt-based disk array.

SmartScope ($995) dual-rack monitor features built-in broadcast-accurate waveform monitoring on two  8-in. LCD screens, allowing any combination of video and waveform monitoring in a single unit less than an inch thick. Powerful image processing allows each of the two screens to be independently selected between video monitoring and waveform monitoring. Seven types of waveform display can be selected: waveform, vectorscope, RGB parade, YUV parade, histogram, audio scope with 16 channels of SDI audio, and audio phase meter.

Updates
Resolve 10, which will be shipping in the third quarter, offers new features for integrating workflows of multiple software products. It also has upgraded on-set tools, enhanced editing features, support for OpenFX plug ins, and new tools for delivering final project masters to cinemas.

The price has been reduced on the Universal VideoHub family of card-based broadcast routers. A fully populated 72×72 router is priced at less than $15,000.
