SVG@NAB Perspectives: Telestream’s Turner Describes New Lightspeed Live Stream, Lightspeed Live Capture
There’s loads to see at the Telestream booth (SL4525), but the company has directed a special spotlight on the debut of two applications, Lightspeed Live Stream and Lightspeed Live Capture.
Lightspeed Live Stream tackles the challenge of preparing real-time content for adaptive-bitrate live streaming. Lightspeed Live Capture, meanwhile, can independently record multiple channels of SD and HD or a single channel of UHD.
VP of Enterprise Management Paul Turner cites three use cases for the Lightspeed Live Stream. First is standard second-screen activity where a content distributor would take programming it would normally deliver to more-traditional delivery points — satellite uplink or terrestrial transmitter — and simultaneously put it out over the web.
“Basically,” he says, “the idea is that you are taking material that is finished and being delivered as an SDI stream and you want to convert that into adaptive bitrate for multiscreen.”
A second target is “catch-up TV” or VOD content.
“With catch-up TV, you are generally replacing some part of the content, be it advertising or not having the rights to some show’s content over an OTT deliverable,” says Turner. “The service has quite a bit of capability in terms of relogo-ing materials so you can rebrand content for your web delivery or have long-form , evergreen replacements for those cases where you don’t have the rights to show a piece of material.”
In the third case, a broadcaster can have channels of applications, such as an HBO Go, Hulu, or Amazon Prime.
“That’s generally been VOD material,” notes Turner, “but you are starting to see some suppliers put live content on there, and, frankly, it’s usually sports.”
Meanwhile, Lightspeed Live Capture can also be installed on the same server to simultaneously capture source video into Vantage, one of the company’s flagship products, for further processing.
Lightspeed Live Capture, in addition to operating as a standalone capture system, can extend live-encoding capability by providing live capture in a number of mezzanine formats into the Vantage Media Processing Platform. Through this combination, users can simultaneously make use of both the real-time streaming capability and the full range of video manipulation that Vantage offers.
Both Lightspeed Live Stream and Lightspeed Live Capture are scheduled to ship by the middle of this year.
