GlobeCast Helps Celebrate 50 Years of Transatlantic TV Transmission

On July 12, 1962, the first transatlantic television transmission was sent from the town of Pleumeur-Bodou in Brittany, France, to Andover, Maine via the Telstar satellite. Exactly 50 years later, on Thursday July 12, GlobeCast participated in an event organized by the Smithsonian Institution and the French Embassy, which saw a live link between France and the United States.

Beginning with a live feed from 1:30-2:30 p.m. EST between the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. and Pleumeur-Bodou, the event continued until 4:30 p.m. with a series of presentations and roundtables at the National Air and Space Museum. Speakers from both governments, as well as leading telecommunications and satellite companies, addressed the public to mark this historic occasion.

GlobeCast Americas CTO Bart Palmer was among the speakers invited by the Smithsonian Institution and the French Embassy, and addressed the progress that broadcast technology has made.

Finally, GlobeCast provided the technical services to ensure successful transmission of the event via satellite, with on-site SNG services and uplink in Washington D.C. and Pleumeur-Bodou.
