NAB 2019: Net Insight Debuts Nimbra Edge, Demos Time-Shift for Sye Streaming Service

Net Insight (Booth SU2806) has launched Nimbra Edge, a secure, interoperable, and easy-to-use cloud transport solution to scale and deliver professional live-media workflows, such as primary distribution and interconnect services. The company is also showcasing a new time-shift feature for its ultra-low latency, synchronized Sye Streaming Service and has announced that Linkedin Corp. has implemented a Nimbra-based media network.

Nimbra Edge
The volume of live media being transported is growing rapidly as consumer demand for more personalized, high quality immersive content is increasing. Further, the introduction of 5G is shifting the transport medium from satellite to other infrastructure to free up spectrum and reduce transport costs. Meanwhile, the market for internet distribution is reaching the technology and quality maturity needed in order to move live content over public and private cloud, enabling customers to move workflows to the cloud and leveraging the elasticity, robustness and price benefits that cloud-based infrastructure offers.

“The introduction of Nimbra Edge extends our media transport capabilities to include cloud-based properties and we can now offer scalable, quality transport across managed, unmanaged, and cloud infrastructure,” says Ulrik Rohne, VP, media networks, Net Insight. “With the launch of Nimbra Edge, Net Insight offers the richest live-media–transport portfolio in the market, ranging from production networks through contribution and now primary distribution and interconnect networks delivered over any infrastructure.”

Nimbra Edge targets primary distribution, sports and news interconnect through a cloud-native architecture. With Nimbra Edge, both service providers and media companies can deploy and operate a highly elastic and reliable cloud ingest, transport, and distribution solution. Nimbra Edge’s architecture comes with an easy to use interface enabling customers to separate between content management and live media transport. Finally, based on an open architecture it allows customer to tie together Nimbra Edge with their current Nimbra ecosystem as well as other open protocols and video formats.

“Nimbra Edge is building on our extensive knowledge in professional media workflows and will enable our customers to extend their offerings with a cloud-native transport solution across public and private clouds,” says Tor Blomdell, head of product, Net Insight.

Customers can deploy Nimbra Edge themselves in private datacenters or in public clouds in order to offer an open, elastic, and robust media pipeline to simplify live content management and transport. Nimbra Edge will be released during the first half of the year.

Sye Streaming Service
Net Insight’s Sye Streaming Service combining ultra-low latency and perfect sync, bringing a TV-like experience to the live-streaming audience. Deployed on top of Microsoft Azure, Sye Streaming Service is massively scalable, streaming to more than hundreds of thousands of viewers across the globe every day and a perfect fit for live trivia, live sports, and live auctions among others. With the new time-shift feature, available in Q2, the service enhances the live experience, allowing the viewer to jump instantly to earlier event highlights.

The new feature enables seamless, on-demand pause, play, and replay of live events. At any time of the live event, the viewer has the power to go back instantly to any highlight, pause the video, and then slide seamlessly back to real-time streaming without losing quality or sync — gaining a better-than-broadcast viewing experience. In addition, Sye’s time-shifting is synchronized across all streams, enabling a flawless multiview experience.

Thanks to this new feature, Sye Streaming Service widens once more its capabilities for a broadcast-grade and beyond Quality of Experience. Sye’s True Live streaming service — ultra-low latency, perfect sync, and massive scalability — has already brought next-generation interactive experiences to viewers all over the world. The European live quiz show Primetime, powered by Sye, sees daily peaks of more than a hundred thousand live concurrent viewers, and has launched in Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Finland, with plans for expanding further in Europe.

Sye Streaming Service has seen tremendous growth since its launch, with a year-over-year increase of more than 300% in streamed volume. Following this impressive demand from all corners of the globe, the service has recently expanded to Asia-Pacific and Latin America, with the aim of giving everyone True Live streaming regardless of where they are in the world.

“We are truly excited about the global expansion and growth of Sye Streaming Service,” says Filippa Hasselström, VP, streaming solutions, Net Insight. “Seeing an increased demand of ultra-low–latency streaming, we believe that we are in the right place at the right time. Moreover, with the addition of time-shift we will further target the sports and E-sports verticals, enabling them to deliver best-of-breed experiences.

One-Click End to End
A new one-click live streaming offering in partnership with Media Excel and Microsoft Azure is also coming in Q2 2019. This end-to-end, one-click transcoding service comes as a built-in capability in Sye Streaming Service, making it easy to connect, transcode and stream in an instant.

LinkedIn Corp.
LinkedIn Corp. selected a Nimbra-based media network to connect its Manhattan office in the Empire State Building and studios in Sunnyvale, CA. The network enables LinkedIn to efficiently produce internal corporate videos as well as videos for its live professional networking platform.

At-home production is key to delivering more live content with better quality with fewer resources and is a major technology shift as the network becomes increasingly important in terms of reliability, capacity and flexibility. This seamless production workflow means that camera feeds are transported between studios and central production facility, in different geographical locations, over an efficient media network.

“Net Insight’s solution enables us to produce shows with the host in New York interviewing people in Sunnyvale and the seamless interactivity is amazing without noticeable latency,” says Gary Schneider, manager, broadcast systems engineering, LinkedIn Corp. “Moving forward, we are planning on utilizing the reliable and high-quality Nimbra for other locations worldwide.”

Says Net Insight CEO Henrik Sund, “We are very pleased to support LinkedIn Corp in getting their remote/at-home production up and running with a short production deadline. More and more of our customers realize that they can capitalize on the potential and improve efficiency and quality, with this new way of working.”
