swXtch.io and Telos collaborate on low-latency broadcast intercom in the cloud
swXtch.io has joined forces with Telos Alliance to enable scalable broadcast intercom in the cloud at low latency, providing broadcasters with the same features, functionality and mission-critical performance they use within their on-prem environments.
swXtch.io’s cloudSwXtch intelligent media network will provide the multicast connectivity and elasticity required to provide clear, real-time communications across multiple teams and locations in support of today’s largest global live productions.
The first live deployment of the technical collaboration took place this summer for a major sports event. cloudSwXtch provided the gateway to help live production teams from a major global broadcaster and a regional sports network use Telos Infinity VIP’s virtual intercom platform from anywhere on the planet. Telos Infinity VIP eliminates the traditional intercom matrix, bringing live voice and contribution audio into the IT backbone without concerns of exceeding the number of available ports. Its networked architecture allows broadcasters and content producers to recreate a multipoint on-prem intercom configuration within a virtual environment.
cloudSwXtch simplifies the connectivity of Telos Infinity VIP software panels from Europe, North America and elsewhere with the physical on-prem communications system, while essentially eliminating any delays on live voice communications. The expanse of the virtual panel architecture will also allow production teams to better support multi-language broadcasts, which will include 22 languages throughout Europe.
“cloudSwXtch’s multicast switching capabilities, unavailable in other systems we tested, enables seamless connectivity in the cloud in ways that replicate the local area network functionality broadcasters have long relied on when using their on-prem intercom systems,” said Martin Dyster, VP of business development, Telos Alliance. “Multicast connectivity sharply reduces the network traffic that results in very noticeable delay, reducing latency from up to 10 seconds to mere milliseconds and enabling real-time conversation without clipping and interruption. cloudSwXtch removes the clunky methodology that we would otherwise have to employ to make this work in a far less effective manner, and effectively positions Telos Infinity VIP as a truly enterprise-level virtual intercom platform.”
swXtch.io and Telos Alliance will continue to collaborate on cloud networking ecosystem initiatives moving forward, with a focus on helping for TV and radio businesses seamlessly extend on-prem systems to the cloud.
“cloudSwXtch was developed to solve networking problems for a variety of businesses, and that includes helping technology vendors migrate mission-critical applications with multicast dependencies to public clouds that lack those features,” said Brent Yates, CEO, swXtch.io. “Telos Infinity VIP requires multicast to ensure that large numbers of camera techs, field producers, technical directors, and on-air talent can clearly listen to each other, get instructions and communicate as needed in dynamic, fast-paced production environments for sports and other live broadcasts. Working closely with the innovators at Telos Alliance, cloudSwXtch has made truly scalable, enterprise-level, broadcast-quality intercom in the cloud a reality for the first time.”
