TRK Ukraine stays in touch with new Riedel intercom system

The Ukrainian Broadcast network TRK Ukraine updated their communications infrastructure to a new Artist digital matrix intercom system from Riedel Communications. Riedel’s intercom solution combines a wired Artist matrix intercom setup with a wireless Acrobat digital communications solution. The Ukrainian systems integrator Comtel was responsible for the installation.

For their two broadcast studios in Kiev and Donezk, TRK needed a flexible intercom solution that not only provided a comms infrastructure in both studios but also offered a possibility to connect the two distant studios. Furthermore TRK needed a solution for wireless communications at the Kiev studio that provided integration into the wired intercom system.

At the heart of the installation in Kiev Riedel installed two Artist 128 mainframes. The two mainframes or connected via a dual fiber ring and provide full system redundancy. Due to its modular approach Artist systems can be expanded with additional matrices and ports to form one single matrix with sizes up to 1,024×1,024 non-blocking ports. Nine Artist 1000 series and 37 Artist 2000 series control panels are installed in Kiev. The secondary audio channel of the Artist 1000 provides digital audio in broadcast quality.

VoIP client cards provide the VoIP-connections to the remote Artist 32 installation in the TRK Donezk studio. The Artist 32 replaces the older Artist M installation that was already set up on Donezk several years ago. Several Artist control panels in Donezk are remotely connected to the Artist installation in Kiev via VoIP.

“We were already avid Riedel Artist users before we decided to upgrade our system,” said Mikhail Smagin, Head of System and Network Connection Division at TRK. Riedel’s modularity allows for flexible infrastructure and lets us expand our system according to our demands. This makes the Riedel Artist technology a real long-term investment. Artist’s flexibility in terms of connections gives us the opportunity to realize specialized applications such as our remote installation in this case.“

The Acrobat installation in Kiev provides a wireless infrastructure of 13 Beltpacks in total. They are intergated into the wired Artist intercom system. Acrobat is a full-duplex wireless communications technology that provides a license-free, cellular architecture with seamless hand-over between cells, allowing each Acrobat Wireless Beltpack to continuously monitor and automatically select the best connection to the Acrobat Cell Controller. Because of its VoIP-over-DECT technology it shows no intereference with IEM or radio microphones and is suited for broadcast applications.
