Live from Rio 2016: Swimming, Golf, Equestrian, Rugby, and Handball Photo Galleries

SVG is live on the scene in Rio for the 2016 Summer Olympics and doing our best to run around to as many venues as possible to document some of the specialty cameras, production professionals, and more that are making this year’s games one of the more compelling showcases of Olympic legends and rising stars. And we mean the production professionals who make it all happen…not the athletes who get all the glory. Read more to see a host of links to various galleries.

2016 Rio Olympics Deodoro Stadium (DES): Rugby Sevens

Deodoro Stadium was home to the debut of rugby sevens as an Olympic sport. Although the 15-player version of the sport appeared at the Olympic Games between 1900 and 1924, Rio 2016 marks the debut of rugby sevens, a faster, shorter adaption. Bravery, skill and speed will be in abundance in the men’s and women’s tournaments. Rugby sevens coverage at the Olympics made use of 14 cameras and included members of the Sky New Zealand production team.

Live from Rio 2016: Photos of the Olympic Golf Course

At the end of today the Olympic Games will have its first male Olympic champion in more than a century and NBC Olympics and the Golf Channel are giving golf’s return to the games a double punch of production power with the help of a relatively new flypack from NEP Group that provides two control rooms with a separate audio room for each and much more. “This is third time the flypack has been used as it was rebuilt for the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year,” says Marc Caputo, NBC Sports, senior director of remote technical operations. “The challenge is we have two venues in one as there is both the unilateral coverage and then Golf Channel’s ‘Live From’” coverage.”

One of the more unique aspects of the Rio Olympics is that swimming and diving do not share a venue. Rio Aquatics Stadium, located at the Olympic Park in Barra, provides plenty of great camera positions for a series of events that captures the attention of Olympic sports fans everywhere. The competition is fierce, the personalities are global super stars, and the technology used to capture the event delivers stunning images from a wide variety of interesting and often wet angles.
