EBU Members will be offered generic applications to deploy Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) during the Olympics and the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), when audiences peak. Three ‘white label’ interactive applications will be provided free to participating EBU Members to customise generic content for entertainment, news or sport.

GlobeCast and FRANCE 24 are launching a Hybrid Broadband Broadcast Television (HbbTV) trial in early 2012 with the support of Orange and SES. The service, to be offered to satellite viewers of FRANCE 24, initially in Western Europe, will add a layer of interactivity to satellite TV programming by harnessing the capability of connected TVs.

Lost slightly in the static generated by NAB, on April 15 the EBU adopted its document <I>Principles for Internet-Connected and Hybrid Television</I> which, it states, if applied, could deliver lower costs, greater choice and a better viewing experience for consumers. It called on all stakeholders to support and respect the principles.
