The SVG Europe Sports TV Awards has seven categories:

 


Category stipulations – all categories

All entries must have a direct European connection either through the company being put forward, the event being covered, the service being offered, or the initiative being undertaken.

*Qualifying period: The sporting event, tournament, league or match, or project, featured in the submission must have occurred between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021 and been televised publicly by a broadcaster or online service, or formed part of a publicly acknowledged trial, test or proof of concept. In the case of the One Planet and Diversity categories, the initiatives profiled in the entry must have been active in that same period.

Categories and Judging Criteria

Category 1 – Outstanding Production Achievement – Event

In this category, SVG Europe recognises a sports production that has delivered outstanding live coverage for viewers and/or media partners and pushed the boundaries of sports broadcasting.

Considerations for 2022 include the overall quality of the production and storytelling; innovative use of new technologies; and the long-term impact of new production techniques. The event could be a multi-day tournament or event, a season-long league or a single match, contest or competition. Judges will take into account the pressures and challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and how these were overcome.

This category covers all sports-related live programming, regardless of the size, type or frequency of the sport.

*Qualifying period: The sporting event, tournament, league or match must have occurred between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021 and been televised publicly by a broadcaster or online service. Proof-of-concept trials or development tests will be taken into consideration where appropriate, but the main event, league or match coverage must have been made available to a general viewing audience.

CATEGORY 2 – OUTSTANDING PRODUCTION ACHIEVEMENT – INNOVATION

In this category, SVG Europe recognises a sports production or broadcasting innovation that has, as part of a wider broadcast or channel/service output, delivered a new way of covering sporting action either on or off-screen.

Considerations for 2022 include; innovative use of new technologies; the lasting impact of new production techniques; and the benefit to the success of overall production. It will also take into account the pressures and challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and how these were overcome. The innovation could be part of a multi-day tournament or event, a season-long league or a single match, contest or competition.

*Qualifying period: The innovation must have been applied during a sporting event, tournament, league or match that occurred between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021 and been televised by a broadcaster or online service. Proof-of-concept trials or development tests will be considered as long as the innovation was made public.

Category 3 – Outstanding OTT or Engagement Experience

The Outstanding OTT or Engagement Experience award is given to a sports OTT or streaming service, feature or app that in the view of the judges takes advantage of digital and personalisation to offer a viewing or user experience that is more engaging than traditional broadcast alone. Considerations include design and ease of use; production enhancements; or innovation in viewing or engagement.

*Qualifying period: The service, feature or app must have been available between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021 and viewable publicly. Proof-of-concept trials or development tests will be taken into consideration where appropriate but the main service, feature or app in the entry must have been made available to a general viewing audience.

2021 Winner: Creating Automagical OTT Experiences by WSC Sports


CATEGORY 4 – OUTSTANDING AUDIO INNOVATION

In this category, SVG Europe recognises a sports production or broadcasting innovation in the field of sound that has, as part of a wider broadcast or channel/service/online/app output, delivered a new way of experiencing or delivering sports television audio.

Considerations for 2022 include; innovative use of new technology; the lasting impact of new production techniques; and the benefit to the success of overall production. It will also take into account the pressures and challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and how these were overcome. The innovation could be part of a multi-day tournament or event, a season-long league or a single match, contest or competition.

*Qualifying period: The innovation must have been applied during a sporting event, tournament, league or match that occurred between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021 and been televised by a broadcaster or online service. Proof-of-concept trials or development tests will be considered as long as the innovation was made public.

Category 5 – One Planet Award for Sustainability in Sports TV

The One Planet Award recognises and rewards individuals, companies, projects or initiatives from across the sports broadcasting and production sector that can demonstrate an impactful contribution to the transition to a net-zero carbon and zero waste society. Applications covering all aspects of the sports TV sector are invited, including the technology we use, our production and operational practices and the editorial content we bring to audiences.

Entries can come from individual companies/organisations or collaborative projects between a range of stakeholders.

Key criteria

 

The judges will be looking for entries that:

 

+Important+ While the judges welcome entries which are cumulative in their success and have been developed or implemented over an extended period, perhaps even years, the pace of change in our industry means that projects, programmes and initiatives that went live more than a year ago are unlikely to make the shortlist. However, if the scheme is long-running but significant success was achieved in the calendar year of 2020, this would qualify. Please make those achievements clear in your submission.

2021 Winner: Green to Screen by IMG Studios’


Category 6 – SVG Europe Women Award for Diversity in Sports TV

The Diversity in Sports TV Award is given to an organisational programme that has successfully encouraged diversity within the sports production and the media industry. Considerations could include an effective public-facing initiative that encourages diversity and inclusion; tangible changes that have improved the diversity of an organisation and/or the wider industry; and both intervention and industry leadership.

This award covers all types of inclusion and diversity including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, socio-economic status, age, ability, religious and political beliefs (or other different ideologies).

Entries can come from individual companies/organisations or collaborative projects between a range of stakeholders.

Key criteria

 

The judges will be looking for entries that:

CATEGORY 7 – OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO EUROPEAN SPORTS PRODUCTION

The SVG Europe Outstanding Contribution to European Sports Production award is presented to an individual who has changed or significantly influenced the nature of sports content creation and distribution within Europe. Criteria include longevity within the industry, the impact their professional career has had on the sports production community, and their commitment to moving the industry forward in a positive way. The winner in this category will be chosen by SVG Europe.
