DAZN brings Movicom’s innovative refcam to the Italian Cup Basketball Final

A new refcam from Movicom bought a fresh perspective to DAZN’s coverage of the Italian Cup Basketball Final between Generazione Vincente Napoli Basket and Emporio Armani Milan

The Italian Cup Basketball Final between Generazione Vincente Napoli Basket and Emporio Armani Milan recently brought a unique perspective to the game thanks to DAZN’s commitment to innovation.

Played out at the Inalpi Arena in Turin on 18 February, a new refcam from Movicom bought a fresh perspective to the match. Already featured on ESPN and WB Networks in the US, this was the first use of the tiny RF camera at a basketball game in Italy.

The game proved especially exciting as the underdogs Napoli led by newcomer coach, Igor Milicic, went on to take the cup 77-72 in their first title ever.

With the first few images of the match coming from the referee’s point of view, commentator Matteo Gandini opened the broadcast with the remarks: “Here are the images from our refcam; unique, special, never used before in basketball in Italy.”

To welcome the fans, Diletta Leotta, one of Italy’s premiere sports presenters, came down to the sidelines to lead the pre-game exclusively for DAZN, alongside Simone Pianigiani, former coach of Siena, Milan and the Italian national team. In the minutes leading to the final, the images and interviews conducted by DAZN were broadcast on the giant screens inside the building.

Movicom developed the wireless head-worn camera as part of the Tokyo Olympics coverage. Being extremely light and unobtrusive the camera is quickly forgotten by the wearer and the images from it look like the perspective of one of the participants on the pitch. It has proven especially popular for college football coverage in the USA on networks like the WB and ESPN.

The refcam, worn by the referee Saverio Lanzarini, is part of DAZN’s enhanced coverage to offer the fans more than what the free-to-air broadcast has to offer. It also included the ability to chat in real time and watch in game statistics.
