The sports broadcasting industry is on the cusp of a revolution. 2024 is going to be a huge year for sport, packed with important events like the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and the UEFA European Football Championship. These events, among others, will serve as a jumping board for the latest advancements in virtual production technology.

In 2024, expect to see virtual production tools being pushed to their limits, creating experiences that are more immersive, more engaging, and more real than ever before. We’re looking at a future where the virtual and the physical are indistinguishable, where every broadcast is an adrenaline-filled adventure into the heart of the game.

This gives sports broadcasters a massive opportunity to offer an unparalleled immersive viewing experience. A world where integrated graphics solutions create a seamless future, where virtual production and real time motion graphics make every second on air pulsate with creativity and impact.

Virtual production platforms

The focus will be on further enhancing the integration and usability of virtual production platforms. Holistic platforms are taking over, seamlessly integrating the existing workflows sports broadcasters and creators use and love and unlocking new levels of efficiency and creativity in sports broadcasting.

The horizon of sports broadcasting is expanding, driven by the strides made in virtual production technology. As we step into this new era, the possibilities are as limitless as our imagination. This is more than a technological evolution. It’s a new chapter in how we tell the stories of sports.

To understand why these holistic production platforms are the future, we need only look at recent developments in the ever-evolving landscape of sports production.

2023 saw virtual production tools evolve into portals to new realms of creativity and storytelling. These innovative technologies empowered production companies and broadcasters to create visual impact and enhance storytelling like never before, reshaping the way audiences experience the adrenaline of sports.

Across Europe, three broadcasters used virtual production platforms to take their FIFA World Cup broadcasts into new dimensions.

Fast, flexible creative storytelling

In the heart of Europe, Belgian broadcaster RTBF, with the help of DreamWall, tried something totally new with their 2022 FIFA World Cup coverage. Their ambitious objective was to create a panoramic view of stadiums, condensed into a single, captivating screen that offered a unique lens into the world of football. This vision came to life in their daily World Cup broadcast, logging an impressive 7.5 hours of live coverage each day.

RTBF went beyond traditional broadcasting by creating an entirely alternate dimension for virtual player interviews. The crew ingeniously linked remote locations to the studio, teleporting photorealistic guests directly into their broadcast from any corner of the globe.

By crafting a colossal virtual production stage that merged an XR LED screen with green screens, they wove in Augmented Reality elements to add depth and context to their storytelling. This harmonious blend of XR, VS, and AR transformed the broadcast into a visual storytelling masterpiece.

Imagine being transported to the bustling streets of Doha, where virtual elements and real-time graphics brought the city’s vibrant ambiance to life. Audiences were treated to live augmented interviews, teleported guests, and an immersive post-game analysis featuring stats, scores, and live player line ups.

This innovative approach by RTBF blurred the lines between the virtual and the real, redefining the viewer’s experience of the World Cup. They managed to achieve engaging and impactful visual storytelling, a story of football that resonated emotionally with the audience.

Crossing over to France, TF1 with the help of DreamWall, also leveraged this virtual production technology to craft virtual elements directly onto the football field, offering an immersive narrative right from the stadium. It wasn’t just about showing the game. It was about telling its story in a way that resonated with every viewer emotionally.

In Slovenia, the embrace of virtual production was equally impressive. Here, the setup of a comprehensive virtual studio for the World Cup demonstrated unparalleled efficiency — a complete transformation in just three weeks by RTV SLO.

These are just three examples from Europe in 2023. This is the future we expect to see more examples of in 2024: rapid, adaptable, and boundlessly creative.

Building on growth and collaboration

In 2023 the sports broadcasting industry moved towards a more interconnected and holistic broadcasting environment. The year was marked by (strategic) partnerships and breakthroughs in sports broadcasting with significant advancement in the creation of a cohesive ecosystem within sports broadcasting. The integration of virtual production with existing production workflows has become a cornerstone for setting new industry standards.

These partnerships are vital in developing a seamlessly integrated solution that encompasses every aspect of broadcasting, from tracking and rendering to keying and compositing.

By forging strategic alliances and leveraging each other’s strengths, the industry is paving the way for a more interconnected and holistic broadcasting environment. This evolution towards an integrated approach is transforming how sports content is produced and consumed, making the broadcasting experience more dynamic, efficient, and engaging for all involved.

With each collaboration, the industry edges closer to a future where virtual production is the norm, not the exception. Through these partnerships, the narrative of sports broadcasting is being rewritten, offering fans new windows into the sports they love.

This is why we expect to see these strategic alliances and breakthroughs delivering bigger, better, bolder productions in 2024.

We can’t wait to see the results!
