During the evening speakers and guests will explore and showcase the concrete progress and plans that have been made to create new talent for the Scottish sports broadcasting industry by spreading awareness of job and career opportunities, providing training, and growing new talent.

The session ‘Three-pronged attack: Bringing new talent to Scottish sports broadcasting’ will be chaired by sports broadcaster and journalist Alison Walker, who has more than 20 years of experience working with the BBC in television and radio. She now freelances for different international broadcasting organisations, including Olympic Broadcasting Services. She is also a founder member of Scottish Women in Sport and was the first woman on the Board of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) Trust.

This session will look at what’s happened in the Scottish sports broadcasting landscape in the past 12 months, from tackling the issue of awareness at grass roots level in schools and enhancing training opportunities in further education and via apprenticeships, to providing the skills needed to people already in the industry.

The panel debating this crucial topic will feature Alison Goring, head of the National Film and Television School (NFTS) Scotland; Heather McLean, head of SVG Europe Women and editor at SVG Europe; Fi Milligan-Rennie, Screen Scotland’s head of education – screen; and Paul Tucker, University of West Scotland senior lecturer in the School of Business and Creative Industries.

Next up, the second session, ‘Your country needs you! Launching a new training scheme’, will see Katie Leveson, BBC Studioworks’ culture and transformation director; Lucy Lake, QTV’s director of people and purpose; and Michael McGee, a trainee at QTV, talking with McLean about a new training course developed between QTV, BBC Studioworks and NFTS Scotland. The course aims to bring live sports and studio production skills to people already working in the TV industry. Ahead of the scheme’s launch, the panel discuss how it will work and what it aims to do for sports broadcasting in the region.

All people of any gender are very welcome to attend.
