Telestream to showcase support for 4K, HEVC at CCW
Telestream will highlight support for 4K and HEVC/H.265 encoding, as well as new products and multiplatform workflow solutions at the CCW Show, 13-14 November in New York City. The company is also featuring new configurations for its newly-acquired closed captioning products.
“There has been considerable discussion in the industry of resolutions exceeding HD. In recognition of that, 4K support and distribution will be a major topic at CCW 2013,” says Paul Turner, VP of enterprise product management at Telestream. “Support for 4K image resolution is already available in all of our Vantage transcoders, and Telestream will be emphasizing that at the show.”
Distribution of this higher resolution format will put additional strain on compression and delivery systems. Because of the increased payload, most 4K distribution systems will utilise H.265 (HEVC) compression. Telestream co-founded the open source x265 (HEVC) project which aims to create the world’s most efficient, highest quality H.265 codec. The x265 project is being managed by development partner MulticoreWare Inc, and it is being introduced under both an open source and commercial license model. HEVC x265 encoding support will be available in Telestream Vantage transcoding products at the end of this quarter.
“Previous collaboration between Telestream and MulticoreWare led to successful work on the GPU acceleration of x264, a task deemed by many to be incredibly difficult, if not impossible,” remarks Jason Garrett-Glaser, lead developer of the x264 project.
“Following great success in the acceleration and commercial deployment of x264, we believe that a similar approach with the collaborative development of the next generation of high-efficiency H.265 (HEVC) codec will benefit the industry,” says Shawn Carnahan, CTO at Telestream. “Leveraging the x264 technology in this new project will ensure that the new codec is as robust, efficient and high quality as its predecessor.”
At CCW, Telestream is also featuring its extensive family of Vantage video transcoding products which enable multiplatform workflows for broadcast, cable, IPTV and multiscreen OTT distribution, as well as production and archiving environments. Further, GPU acceleration is available for all Vantage transcode products with Telestream’s Lightspeed Server. Telestream extends its workflow solutions for broadcast and post-production with TrafficManager and Post Producer, new products built on the Vantage platform making their east coast debut at CCW.
TrafficManager addresses several key challenges which broadcasters and cable/IPTV service providers now face. As more content is received as files instead of tapes, TrafficManager, automates media ingest from digital delivery services, processes, and delivers the media to ad-insertion or on-air servers. With hundreds of file formats to process in mixed SD and HD workflows, TrafficManager streamlines internal ad processes by automatically making decisions based upon media attributes.
Post Producer addresses the issue of repetitive rendering of different versions of media for today’s multi-language, multi-platform distribution. Based on user templates, Post Producer automatically assembles a segment or spot, compositing video, graphics, titles and captions or subtitles, and applying audio processing as required. Alternate versions are automatically created by simply substituting the necessary elements.
Telestream recently announced new, simplified product configurations for its closed captioning products, bringing them within reach of more users. MacCaption and CaptionMaker allow users to easily author, edit, encode, and repurpose video closed captions and subtitles for television, web, and mobile delivery. Utilizing exclusive e-Captioning technology and next generation CEA-708 digital captioning technology, these software products simplify the process of complying with FCC and other regulatory requirements, enabling greater access to standard and high-definition broadcast content for television, online, and mobile viewers.
