FFT, France Télévisions collaborating on 4K demo at French Open

In a further indication of the new ultra-HD format’s global ascendancy, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) and France Télévisions – the official broadcaster and executive producer of the Roland-Garros Tennis Tournament – are preparing to undertake a 4K trial at this year’s French Open, which is currently taking place in Paris.

The trial is scheduled for next week – the second of this year’s tournament. Live multi-camera capture of play on the centrepiece court, Philippe Chatrier, will be fed into an XT3-LSM live production system configured 1-in, 1-out in order to test live show motion replays in 4K resolution.

Joining FFT and France Télévisions in executing this significant demo are broadcast technical services specialist AMP Visual TV, satellite operator Eutelsat and, for digital compression of the signal, ATEME.

Notably, the demo is a very public one, with tournament visitors able to experience the resulting 4K images in either live viewing or replay as part of France Télévisions’ on-site showroom. This area – which also plays host to a trial of Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits’ latest home surround sound technology – can be found on the ground floor of the Philippe Chatrier court in the RG LAB.
