SVG Europe goes plastic-free for FutureSport 2017
SVG Europe has announced that its FutureSport event at The Kia Oval this week will be plastic-free in line with the objectives of Sky’s ongoing Ocean Rescue Campaign. The legendary cricketing venue is aiming to become an entirely plastic-free venue to both minimise its overall environmental impact and to help support Sky in its initiative to reduce the huge quantity of water bottles and other consumer plastics that currently end up in the world’s oceans each year.
“We are delighted to be supporting this important initiative, which is now garnering increasing traction across the broadcast industry,” says SVG Europe general manager Joe Hosken.
The Kia Oval took a number of major steps towards ahead of its 100th Test Match this past August, including the installation of 20 new water fountains around the ground and the free distribution (by Sky Ocean Rescue) of up to 20,000 reusable water bottles. The initiative was highlighted by Sky Sports commentary teams throughout the Test, whilst the OB compound itself was also plastic-free.
Meanwhile, Sky Sports’ Operations and Contracts Supervisor, Jo Finon, confirms that the broadcaster continues to make significant strides towards a plastic-free operation. She tells SVG Europe: “Sky Sports have embraced the Ocean Rescue campaign by starting to remove single use plastic from our OB compounds. We have worked closely with CTV to make all our Big Darts events (Blackpool, Wolverhampton, Dublin and Alexandra Palace) single use plastic free, by CTV integrating a watercooler into their tender and catering or the venue providing coolers. Sky Sports have been able to have 73 TX days as single use plastic free compounds, which has allowed us to not consume more than 14,000 bottles of water. Sky Sports are committed to making all our outside broadcasts single use plastic free and will be busy in 2018 making this happen.”
