XD Motion’s X fly 3D enhances Six Nations coverage

When Scotland travelled to the Stade de France last Sunday (26 February) to take on France in the Six Nations, they were hoping to make it three wins on the bounce. The result may not have gone their way, but viewers were treated to an impressive broadcast featuring AR graphics enabled by XD Motion.

Host broadcaster France TV, with Fred Godard as director and Fred Gaillard as production manager, once again selected the X fly 3D cablecam which delivered to Unreal Engine 3D to create unique graphics, including a team presentation that ran from goal to goal in one movement.

“To see a full sequence running all the way goal to goal in one movement and there being no problems on AR tracking, that is very complex,” said Benoit Dentan, CEO at XD Motion, “especially as the stadium is so wide.”

Another challenge on the day was the high winds in the stadium. Denton added: “Wind was 60km/hour at the edge yet we successfully covered the game in full without any problem. The eight fibre ropes, unique on our system, give redundancy and safety and certainly mean better stability in high wind.

“Our X fly 3D offers great resolution of stability without any tracking visual or software and there are no parameters to adjust with multi technologies. We switch it on and it works.”

As Gaillard said: “C’était parfait et magnifique.”

The X fly 3D will be back in action in the Six Nations on Saturday 18 March and will also be utilised during the upcoming Rugby World Cup, which will take place in France in September.

SVG Europe’s Football Summit will explore production of the beautiful game, with topics including the art of directing, making coverage more immersive, creating content for clubs, advanced punditry and analysis and more. For more information on the 22 March event and to register click here
