PSV future-proofs its business with VOD solution from JW Player

Eindhoven-based football club PSV (Philips Sport Vereniging) was founded on 31 August 1913. At first only amateurs and youth players joined the club, but when professional football was introduced in the Netherlands in 1954, a professional football section was duly added. Today a top international club, PSV is back in the UEFA Champions League this season and bringing fans along for the ride.

PSV has been a fixture of Netherlands’ top flight football league, the Eredivisie, for decades and is always looking for ways to engage its dedicated audience. One way in which the club stays connected with its fans is through video, driven by its website and app. To satisfy the ever-growing demand from fans for premium video content, the club decided to increase investment into a new, scalable video solution.

In order to be successful, PSV had three primary objectives: effectuate a smooth transition from their previous player onto the PSV website and app, including a frictionless migration of all assets; provide video-on-demand (VOD), live streaming and subscriptions services for fans to engage in game and player content; and partner with a cost-effective and innovative platform to grow with the business.

With these objectives in mind, PSV sought to build a best-in-class VOD experience for fans by partnering with JWP. This relationship would allow PSV to deliver video across its website and app while providing the ability to scale by opening the door to live streaming and subscriptions in the future.

PSV had a clear goal of boosting viewership and retention, which JWP was able to achieve. JWP’s end-to-end solution delivers reliable, consistent performance for VOD content regardless of use case, providing support to grow into a full suite of video functionality. Its recommendations and playlists engine drives engagement, while there are multiple, flexible monetisation options, including advertising, sponsorship integration and subscription services. It also offers easy to deploy live streaming.

As a result, PSV achieved 50% higher views than launch projections at the start of the partnership.

This was accomplished because JWP was able to successfully and seamlessly migrate web and app integrations along with on-boarding in a timely fashion.

Additionally, JWP delivered a stable, reliable video player for VOD, enabled a system for testing all possible monetisation strategies, such as advertising placements and rules, and continued to develop the platform to maximise and uncover new opportunities for video-driven revenue.

With the mechanisms for video scalability in place, PSV’s potential for boosts in subscriptions and additional revenue streams is virtually limitless.
