Luna Remote Systems make Wimbledon debut with High Speed Falcon 1D

Luna Remote Systems was invited to SW19 for this first time this summer, with its long distance High Speed Falcon 1D System called into action. Running from 3-16 July, the world famous tennis event asked Luna to supply its 1D Falcon High Speed system for the beauty shot which overlooks their site in London.

Luna first used its specially commissioned 1KM high speed system in February this year in Saudi Arabia for the Saudi Cup Horse Racing festival to cover the sprint races. However it had a different use for AELTC.

“The Falcon 1KM can travel up to speeds of 70mph but the aim of the 1D specifically for Wimbledon was to offer beauty shots, give a sense of the size of the grounds and to show the courts from a different perspective. The system was placed on land across the road from the courts themselves and at such a height that we got to capture the awesome size and get a sense of the atmosphere of this special venue,” said commercial director of Luna, Jo Adams.

“With the 1D system you can use a range of different lens sizes depending on your location and what shot the director/camera supervisor wishes to achieve. In this case it was the HJ45 which means we also got a really good idea of the overall Wimbledon location, you can see The Shard, as well as a spectator entering Centre Court.”

Set up for the event began at the end of June with two crane towers being placed around 500m apart to achieve the required run for the shot to show the whole venue.

“After the crane towers go in, the rig is pretty speedy with the system itself as it’s the most lightweight system in its class. We listened to what our clients needed from this type of system and one of the big requirements was that the system be easier to transport and rig – and therefore be more cost and time effective,” added Adams. “It Is made from carbon fibre and is smaller than anything else on the market but does the same job, over a longer distance.”

Luna’s 1KM high speed system will now move onto Budapest for the World Athletics Championships in August.
